Happy Halloween from Don Draper and Joan Holloway (with a bit brighter of a ‘do than normal) from Mad Men!  Wishing you a fun, safe, sweet and spooky day.

Did you dress up for Halloween this year?

Scary Strong Shoulders

October 29th, 2010 § 3 comments § permalink

This week the second annual TribeCon was held in New Orleans.  It’s an interactive conference all about building communities online and activating them in the real world, and I had the pleasure of volunteering.  Before we got started with an opening reception I donned this splendid Halloween-themed blazer and hit the hood in search of spooky decorations.

Surprisingly there weren’t too many houses that were lavishly decorated, but I thought these gateway skulls and ghosts were just right for capturing the spirit.  And even though orange and black may not be a normal color combination for me it’s just SO Halloween-y!

For the evening I switched up the jean shorts for a black bandeau skirt to class it up a bit. This blazer was super comfortable and I loved the over-exaggerated shoulder pads.  They stuck out just enough to look like little shelves, creating a strong shoulder without being too boxy.

Are you wearing any orange and black this week to celebrate Halloween?

Shades of Grey

October 26th, 2010 § 7 comments § permalink

There are 42 cemeteries in the New Orleans area, 90% of which are all above ground. This particularly one,  Saint Louis #3, opened in 1854 and is the third of three Roman Catholic cemeteries around town.  The oldest and most famous, Saint Louis Cemetery #1, is believed to hold the renowned Voodoo priestess Marie Laveau and one of Jean Lafitte‘s pirates!

Unfortunately for me when I arrived at Saint Louis #3 today they were closed for the day, hence why I’m standing just outside the gates.  If you peek over my shoulders you can see the tops of the vaults and the detail of each and every marble tomb.  I’ll be heading back soon to take a few more shots up close.

I’ve been very intrigued by the simplicity of monochrome outfits lately.  Grey is one of my favorite neutrals so I pulled a variety of light, dark, and blue shades to give the look a try for myself.  At first I felt a little too matchy-matchy, but after wearing this around for a bit I started to appreciate the subtleties of it.  I think next time I’ll add a similar toned scarf or hair piece.

Have you tried the monochrome look?  What do you think about it?
